1960 Topps #178 Woodie Held

About Woodie Held
Woodson George "Woodie" Held broke into pro ball in 1951, signed by Yankees scout Joe Devine for a $6,000 bonus out of Sacramento, California, where he had worked as a batboy for the Pacific Coast League's Solons. He debuted with New York in September 1954, then moved to Kansas City in a June 1957 trade and on to Cleveland a year later in the deal that sent Roger Maris to the Athletics. Installed at shortstop by manager Joe Gordon, Held became the first Indians shortstop to hit 20-plus home runs in a season, doing it three years running from 1959 to 1961, topped by a career-high 29 in 1959. His 1960 season, pictured on this Cleveland card, was interrupted in July when he broke a finger turning a double play while leading the club in homers and RBIs. On August 1, 1963, he led off the first four-consecutive-home-run inning in American League history. Held later sat on Baltimore's bench for the 1966 World Series title and died in 2009 at his Dubois, Wyoming ranch.
