1960 Topps #63 George Strickland

About George Strickland
George Bevan Strickland picked up his nickname, "Bo," as a bruised-up New Orleans kid — his grandmother's boss at a casket factory joked he'd never seen a fella with so many "bobos," and the name stuck. Strickland signed with his hometown Pelicans out of American Legion ball in 1943, served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, and reached the majors with Pittsburgh in 1950 after being taken in the Rule 5 draft. Traded to Cleveland in August 1952, he took over at shortstop for Ray Boone and anchored the Indians' infield defense, leading American League shortstops in double plays in 1953 and fielding percentage in 1955. He started at short on the 1954 Indians, whose 111 wins set an AL record, though he went hitless in that fall's World Series sweep by the Giants, his only postseason trip. Strickland played ten big-league seasons, later coached and twice managed Cleveland on an interim basis, and became the first New Orleans native to manage in the majors. This 1960 Topps card, issued in his final playing season, shows him with the Indians.
