About Carl Mathias
Carl Lynwood Mathias, a left-handed pitcher from Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania, signed with Cleveland in 1955 after graduating from Oley Valley High School. The Indians brought him up from Triple-A in the summer of 1960, and he worked seven relief appearances down the stretch, going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA. That rookie showing landed him on 1960 Topps #139, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset (#117-148) — a recognized rookie card for the switch-hitting southpaw. Selected by the expansion Washington Senators in the 1960 draft, Mathias resurfaced in the majors in 1961. His June 18 start at Fenway Park was the highlight: he worked into the ninth inning with Washington ahead of Boston 12-7, only to watch the bullpen surrender the lead in a 13-12 loss. The White Sox hit him hard in his next start on June 24, handing him his second career defeat. He made two more relief appearances before returning to the minors, finishing 0-2 with a 7.14 ERA over 11 career games. Mathias pitched through 1964.
