About Bobby Locke

Lawrence "Bobby" Locke broke into pro ball in 1953, signed by Cleveland scout Laddie Placek for a $6,000 bonus after a standout Fayette County, Pennsylvania prep career that included a state championship one-hitter and a berth in the 1952 Sandlot Classic at the Polo Grounds. He led the Florida State League with 247 strikeouts as a 19-year-old with Class D Daytona Beach, then lost two seasons to military service before reaching Cleveland in June 1959. His 1960 Topps card, a recognized rookie issue, catches him in his finest big-league season: career highs of 11 starts and 123 innings, and both shutouts of his career, on his way to a 3.37 ERA. Locke stayed with the Indians through a full 1961 season before a nine-year, five-club journey through St. Louis, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and California, finishing 16-15 in 165 games. His favorite memory: plunking Ted Williams in his major-league debut, after which the Splendid Splinter told reporters, "that kid really throws hard."
