1960 Topps #36 Russ Nixon

About Russ Nixon
Russ Nixon signed with the Cleveland Indians in June 1953 alongside his identical twin brother Roy, straight out of Cincinnati's Western Hills High School after the pair starred on a national American Legion championship team the year before. He climbed the Tribe's system, hitting .387 at Jacksonville Beach in 1954 and .385 at Keokuk in 1955, and debuted in the majors on April 20, 1957, singling off Detroit's Frank Lary in his first at-bat. The left-handed-hitting catcher split time with Jim Hegan and Hal Naragon as a rookie, then took over as Cleveland's regular catcher in 1958, batting a career-high .301. His 1960 Topps card catches him with the Indians just before a June trade sent him to Boston, where he caught for the Red Sox through 1965 and again in 1968, sandwiched around two years with the Twins. He finished with a .268 average over 906 games, every one of them without ever stealing a base, still a major-league record. Nixon later coached the Big Red Machine to the 1976 World Series title and managed the Reds (1982-83) and Braves (1988-90) across a 55-year career in the game.
