About Bill Bruton
William Haron Bruton grew up playing sandlot ball in segregated Alabama and didn't sign pro until 1950, after his father-in-law, Negro Leagues Hall of Famer Judy Johnson, talked him up to a Braves scout. He debuted with Milwaukee in 1953 at 27 — a "sensational" first week that included a walk-off homer in the Braves' first Milwaukee game — and became the club's leadoff man and center fielder for eight seasons, leading the National League in stolen bases three straight years (1953–1955) and in triples twice. A knee injury cost him the 1957 World Series, but in 1958 he hit .412 with a homer and drove in Milwaukee's Game 1 win over the Yankees with a tenth-inning single. On August 2, 1959, he became only the fourth major leaguer to hit two bases-loaded triples in one game. Traded to Detroit after the pennant-winning 1960 season — the year of his 1960 Topps card, #37 — he played four more years before retiring to a 23-year executive career with Chrysler.
