About Johnny Logan

Nicknamed "Yatch" — a boyhood tag drawn from a Russian-Croatian phrase neighbors used to quiet him down as a rambunctious kid in Endicott, New York — Johnny Logan signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1947 after being discovered by scout Dewey Griggs. He debuted in the majors in 1951 and took over at shortstop as the franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1953, anchoring the infield for nine seasons. A four-time All-Star (1955, 1957–59), Logan hit .297 with a league-leading 37 doubles in his best season, 1955, and helped the Braves win back-to-back pennants in 1957–58, homering in Milwaukee's Game 2 victory over the Yankees in the 1957 World Series. Traded to Pittsburgh in June 1961, he closed his playing days in 1964 with Japan's Nankai Hawks, becoming the first player to win a championship in both the major leagues and Nippon Professional Baseball. This 1960 Topps #205 catches him mid-run with the pennant-winning Braves, a scrappy, sure-handed shortstop who spent 13 big-league seasons turning double plays for Milwaukee.
