About Carl Willey
Carlton Francis Willey broke in with the Boston Braves organization in 1951, working his way up through Quebec and Atlanta before two Army years in Germany cost him nearly his whole delivery. He rebuilt it with the Wichita Braves, going 21-6 in 1957 to lead the American Association in wins and earn league MVP honors. A minor-league no-hitter got him recalled to Milwaukee in 1958, and the rookie right-hander made it count, twice shutting out Willie Mays and the Giants — one coming the day Mays notched his 1,000th career hit — and finishing with a league-leading four shutouts. Stuck behind Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, and Bob Buhl for four more seasons, Willey was dealt to the Mets in 1963 and anchored their rotation until a Gates Brown line drive broke his jaw in 1964 spring training, derailing his career. He finished 38-58 with a 3.76 ERA over eight seasons, then scouted for the Phillies before returning home to Cherryfield, Maine.
