About Lew Burdette
Lew Burdette anchored the Milwaukee Braves' rotation alongside Warren Spahn and Bob Buhl through the 1950s. Signed by the Yankees in 1947 out of the University of Richmond, the Nitro, West Virginia native reached the majors in 1950 before New York traded him to Boston in August 1951 for 20-game winner Johnny Sain. Burdette led the NL in ERA (2.70) in 1956, then delivered the signature performance of his career in the 1957 World Series: three complete-game wins over the Yankees, including two shutouts — the first pitcher since Christy Mathewson in 1905 to manage that — earning World Series MVP honors and Milwaukee's only championship. He won 20 games in 1958 and tied Spahn for the NL lead with 21 in 1959, making two All-Star teams. On August 18, 1960, the season pictured on this card, he no-hit the Phillies, retiring the minimum 27 batters. A notorious prankster long suspected of throwing a spitball, he shrugged, "My best pitch is one I do not throw." He finished 203-144 over 18 seasons. This card misspells his name "Lou" on both sides — fittingly, Burdette himself spelled his middle name that way for most of his life.
