About Billy Goodman
Billy Goodman broke into pro ball with the Atlanta Crackers in 1944 before debuting for the Boston Red Sox in 1947, launching a 16-year career that also took him to the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Colt .45s. Renowned as one of the game's most versatile players, he manned every position except pitcher and catcher, a trait that dated to his high school days in Concord, North Carolina, where Red Sox general manager Eddie Collins likened him to 1930s super-utility star Jimmy Dykes. A two-time All-Star (1949, 1953), Goodman won the 1950 American League batting title with a .354 average and finished runner-up to Phil Rizzuto in that year's MVP voting. He retired with a .300 career average. His 1960 Topps card catches him with the White Sox, the club he helped to the 1959 American League pennant and World Series. Goodman was later honored with induction into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (1969) and, posthumously, the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame (2004).
