About Jake Striker

Jake Striker — born Wilbur Scott Striker on October 23, 1933, in New Washington, Ohio — was a left-handed pitcher out of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, the only player from that school ever to reach the majors. Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1952, he made a sharp big-league debut on September 25, 1959, starting against the Kansas City Athletics and working 6⅔ innings for the win with a 2.70 ERA, his only outing of the season. That December, Cleveland shipped Striker to the Chicago White Sox in a seven-player trade that also sent Minnie Miñoso and Dick Brown to Chicago in exchange for Norm Cash and Johnny Romano. Pictured in a Sox uniform on his 1960 Topps rookie card (#169), Striker made just two relief appearances for Chicago before his final major-league game on April 24, 1960, finishing with a 1-0 record, 3.48 ERA and six strikeouts across three career games.
