About Barry Latman
Barry Latman, a broad-shouldered right-hander nicknamed "Shoulders," signed with the White Sox out of USC in 1955 after a standout prep career at Los Angeles's Fairfax High, where he threw a perfect game and drew a string of encouraging letters from Ty Cobb. He debuted with Chicago in September 1957 and closed 1958 by shutting out Kansas City on three hits. His 1960 Topps card pictures him with the pennant-winning 1959 White Sox, though he sat out that fall's World Series loss to the Dodgers and, by the time the card reached shelves, had already been traded to Cleveland for Herb Score on the eve of the 1960 opener. Latman thrived with the Indians, opening 1961 with nine straight wins en route to a 13-5 record and his lone All-Star selection. Across 11 major-league seasons with the White Sox, Indians, Angels, and Astros, he went 59-68 with 829 strikeouts. An observant Jew who refused to pitch on the High Holidays, he was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
