About Early Wynn
Early Wynn signed with the Washington Senators at 17 after impressing scout Clyde Milan at a Florida tryout camp, launching his pro career in 1937 with Class D Sanford. The hard-throwing right-hander stuck with Washington through 1948, then anchored a Cleveland Indians rotation alongside Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Mike Garcia that helped set the American League's 111-win record in 1954. Traded to the White Sox after 1957, the supposedly washed-up 37-year-old instead paired with Billy Pierce atop the rotation, winning the 1959 Cy Young Award at 39 with a league-leading 22 wins as Chicago claimed its first pennant since 1919; he opened that World Series by striking out six over seven scoreless innings in an 11-0 Game One win. Wynn leads off the 1960 Topps set at card #1 fresh off that championship season, a lead-off spot whose heavy handling atop the pack makes high-grade copies especially tough to find. He returned to Cleveland in 1963 to chase a milestone, beating Kansas City on July 13 to become the 14th pitcher in major-league history to win 300 games. He finished with 2,334 strikeouts and nine All-Star selections, and the Hall of Fame inducted him in 1972.
