About Al Lopez
Al Lopez broke into pro ball in 1924, signing with the Class D Tampa Smokers at 16. A durable catcher, he spent nineteen big-league seasons (1928-1947) with Brooklyn, the Boston Bees, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland, making two All-Star teams (1934, 1941) and setting a major-league record with 1,918 games caught, a mark that stood until 1987. Nicknamed "El Señor" for his Spanish ancestry and unfailingly gentlemanly manner, Lopez proved just as gifted running a dugout. Hired by Cleveland in 1951 after managing in the minors at Indianapolis, he posted a .617 winning percentage, still the best in franchise history, capped by the Indians' then-record 111 wins and the 1954 pennant, though they were swept in a World Series upset by the Giants. Taking over the White Sox in 1957, he built the speed-and-defense "Go-Go Sox" around Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio, and Minnie Minoso, breaking Chicago's decades-long pennant drought in 1959. On this 1960 card he is shown fresh off that pennant, managing the Sox to a third-place finish. His .584 career winning percentage remains among the sport's best, and his clubs never posted a losing record in 18 full seasons. Lopez entered the Hall of Fame in 1977.
