About Danny Murtaugh
This manager-subset card catches Danny Murtaugh mid-dynasty: the Pittsburgh skipper who delivered the franchise's first World Series title in 35 years the very season the card hit shelves. A Chester, Pennsylvania native who gave up a shipyard job to turn pro for $65 a month in 1937, Murtaugh broke into the majors in 1941 with the Philadelphia Phillies and led the NL in steals as a rookie, then served in World War II combat with the Army's 97th Infantry before closing his playing career as Pittsburgh's second baseman (1948-51), finishing ninth in the 1948 NL MVP vote. Named Pirates manager in August 1957, he built a contender that stunned the Yankees in the 1960 World Series on Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 walk-off homer. Murtaugh resigned and returned to the Pittsburgh dugout across four separate terms spanning nearly two decades, capping his run with a second title in 1971 over Baltimore, powered by Roberto Clemente's .414 Series. He won Sporting News Manager of the Year both championship seasons and died in December 1976, two months after his final game; the Pirates retired his No. 40.
