About Manuel Javier
Manuel Julián Javier Liranzo signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1956, working through Pittsburgh's farm system as one of the fastest, best-fielding infielders in the minors. His 1960 Topps Sport Magazine Rookie Star card (#133) still shows him in Pirates gear, but by the time the set reached shelves St. Louis had already sent Vinegar Bend Mizell and Dick Gray to Pittsburgh for Javier and Ed Bauta. Javier debuted for the Cardinals on May 28, 1960, and manned second base in St. Louis through 1971 before closing his career with the 1972 Cincinnati Reds. Teammates called him "Hoolie"; catcher Tim McCarver dubbed him "The Phantom" for his knack of completing double-play pivots while eluding hard-sliding baserunners. A two-time All-Star (1963, 1968), Javier anchored the Cardinals' pennant-winning infields of 1964 and 1967, then starred in October, breaking up Boston's Jim Lonborg no-hit bid with a Game 2 double and crushing a three-run homer in Game 7 of the 1967 World Series. He batted .333 across 19 Series games and won two titles. Javier retired with a .257 average, 78 homers and 506 RBI, and was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2022.
