About Bob Skinner

Robert Ralph Skinner, a 6-foot-4 left-handed hitter from La Jolla, California, signed with Pittsburgh in 1951 and spent two years in the Marines before reaching the majors in 1954. He broke out in left field for the Pirates, hitting .321 in 1958 for his first All-Star nod, then started both All-Star Games in 1960 as Pittsburgh won the pennant. He drove in a career-high 86 runs that year and, after a thumb injury sidelined him for five games, returned for Game 7 of the World Series, laying down a sacrifice bunt during the eighth-inning rally that put the Pirates ahead in their upset of the Yankees. Dealt to Cincinnati in 1963 and St. Louis in 1964, he won a second ring in a reserve role with the champion Cardinals. Known as "Sleepy" for his laid-back demeanor, Skinner closed a 12-year career with a .277 average, 103 homers and 531 RBIs, then coached for decades, earning a third championship as the Pirates' hitting coach in 1979. His 1960 Topps card #113 catches him with Pittsburgh in the midst of that championship run.
