About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards scattered through the 1960 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a nickname headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The players on this card

"Fork & Knuckler" pairs the National and American League's top relief craftsmen around their signature pitches. Roy Face taught himself the forkball after watching Joe Page tinker with it in spring training, wedging the ball between his index and middle fingers to kill its spin. Danny Murtaugh moved him to the bullpen full time in 1957, and Face repaid him with an NL-leading 20 saves in 1958, then an 18-1 record and a record .947 winning percentage in 1959 behind a 22-game winning streak. In 1960 he added a career-high 24 saves and three more in the Pirates' World Series win over the Yankees. Hoyt Wilhelm's knuckleball carried him from a 29-year-old rookie to a 21-year career; Baltimore manager Paul Richards used him as a starter in 1959, and Wilhelm answered with an AL-best 2.19 ERA over 226 innings. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1985, the first reliever ever inducted.
