About Jim Umbricht
Jim Umbricht's 1960 Topps card (#145) pictures him with the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, a recognized rookie issue for the 6-foot-4 right-hander teammates called "Big Jim." A two-sport team captain (baseball and basketball) at the University of Georgia, Umbricht turned pro in 1953 with the Class D Waycross Bears, converting from shortstop to pitcher, then lost two seasons to Army service before Pittsburgh acquired him from the Braves' organization for outfielder Emil Panko in 1959. He debuted with the Pirates that September and shuttled between the majors and Triple-A through 1961, part of the club during its 1960 World Series championship season though left off the postseason roster. Selected by the expansion Houston Colt .45s in the 1961 draft, he became one of the National League's sharpest relievers, going 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA in 1962. Diagnosed with melanoma requiring leg surgery in spring 1963, Umbricht pitched through the pain and finished 4-3, 2.61 that season, his last. He died in April 1964 at 33; Houston retired his No. 32, the franchise's first, and inducted him into its Hall of Fame.
