About Roy Face
ElRoy Leon Face signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1949 out of Averill Park, New York, then moved through the Dodgers' system before Pittsburgh general manager Branch Rickey claimed him in the 1952 Rule 5 draft. A journeyman starter early on, Face was sent to Double-A New Orleans in 1954 to learn an off-speed pitch; he taught himself a forkball after watching veteran Joe Page work on one in spring training, and manager Danny Murtaugh moved him to the bullpen full time. The pitch made Face the game's first true modern closer. In 1959 he went 18-1 in relief, a .947 winning percentage that remains the best ever posted by a pitcher with at least 15 decisions, part of a 22-game win streak. He saved three games in the 1960 World Series upset of the Yankees, made six All-Star selections, and led the NL in saves three times. Beat writer Jack Hernon dubbed him "The Baron of the Bullpen" in 1959. Face's spectacular prior season made his 1960 Topps card, #20 in the set, one of its most sought-after issues. He pitched until 1969, mostly for Pittsburgh, and died in 2026 at 97.
