About Curt Raydon
Curt Raydon's 1960 Topps card, #49, arrived after the only big-league season the tall right-hander would ever have. Born in Bloomington, Illinois, Raydon signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 and was swept up that December in a six-for-one trade to Pittsburgh that brought Milwaukee third baseman Danny O'Connell, the only deal of its kind in major-league history. After four full seasons in the Pirates' farm system, the 6-foot-4 Raydon made Pittsburgh's 1958 Opening Day roster and earned a save in his April 15 debut against the defending-champion Braves. Moved into the rotation that summer, he threw a two-hit win over the Giants at Seals Stadium on June 12 and a four-hit shutout at Forbes Field on July 25, finishing 8-4 with a 3.62 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 31 games. A finger cyst and sore arm ended his big-league run after that lone season; his rookie card had already come a year earlier, in 1959 Topps. He pitched three more minor-league seasons before retiring, and died in 2018 at age 84.
