About Gino Cimoli
Gino Cimoli grew up in San Francisco's Italian North Beach neighborhood and hit .607 in his only season of high school ball at Galileo High before signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. Six years advancing through Brooklyn's system — batting .300 or better three times at Triple-A — preceded his 1956 debut. A clubhouse talk from catcher Roy Campanella helped Cimoli shed an early "Lackadaisical Latin" label, and 1957 brought a breakout season: a .293 average, a walk-off homer off Robin Roberts, and his only All-Star nod. On April 15, 1958, he became the first batter in a major-league game on the West Coast. Traded to St. Louis, then Pittsburgh, Cimoli was the Pirates' fourth outfielder on the 1960 World Series champions, pinch-hitting to spark the decisive Game Seven rally that set up Bill Mazeroski's title-clinching homer. He later led the American League in triples for Kansas City in 1962. This 1960 Topps card, No. 58, shows him in the Pittsburgh uniform he wore to that championship.
