The players on this card
"Win-Savers" pairs the two relievers who anchored the 1959 "Go-Go" White Sox bullpen to the franchise's first pennant in 40 years. Turk Lown — born Omar Joseph Lown in Brooklyn, nicknamed as a boy for his fondness for eating turkey — arrived off Cincinnati waivers in June 1958 and thrived in 1959, leading the American League with 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA over 60 appearances. Gerry Staley, who found a career-saving sinker after the White Sox picked him up from the Yankees in 1956, topped the majors with 67 games pitched that year, going 8-5 with a 2.24 ERA. On September 22, Staley needed just one pitch — a Vic Power grounder turned into a game-ending double play — to clinch the pennant. Both stayed sharp in 1960: Staley made the AL All-Star team and went 13-8, while Lown chipped in five more saves.
