1960 Topps #56 Steve Korcheck

About Steve Korcheck
Steve Korcheck was a two-sport star at George Washington University — a Southern Conference Player of the Year and third-team All-America lineman on the football team who also caught for the baseball Colonials. The Washington Senators signed him in 1954, the same year the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round of the NFL draft, and Korcheck chose the diamond. He debuted for Washington on September 6, 1954, and hit .278 in 1955 before military service erased his 1956 and 1957 seasons. Back with the Senators for 1958-59, he closed out a four-year career with a .159 average, 23 hits and 7 RBIs in 58 games behind the plate. His 1960 Topps card, #56, pictures him with Washington near the close of that run. Korcheck later earned a master's and doctorate at GW, coached its baseball team, and spent 1980-1997 as president of Florida's Manatee Community College. GW inducted him into its athletics Hall of Fame in 1975.
