About Hal Naragon
Hal Naragon was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent parts of ten American League seasons as a dependable backup receiver, prized for a strong throwing arm and a quiet, team-first disposition. Signed by Bill Veeck's Cleveland Indians as a Barberton, Ohio high schooler in 1947, he lost two seasons to Marine Corps duty during the Korean War before returning to catch behind Jim Hegan on Cleveland's record-setting 111-win 1954 pennant winners, even catching an inning of that year's World Series. His best season came in 1955, a .323 average in 57 games. Traded to Washington on May 25, 1959, with pitcher Hal Woodeshick for catcher Ed Fitz Gerald, Naragon was the Senators' backup catcher pictured on this 1960 Topps card, hitting .207 in 33 games behind starter Earl Battey that year. He followed the franchise to Minnesota in 1961 and later coached bullpens for the pennant-winning 1965 Twins and world champion 1968 Tigers alongside pitching coach Johnny Sain.
