About Jim Busby
James Franklin Busby, born January 8, 1927, in Kenedy, Texas, was a football and track scholarship athlete at TCU who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1948 after hitting .509 in his final college season. He won the center-field job in 1951 under new manager Paul Richards, opening the season with a single, a double steal, and a suicide-squeeze dash home that Richards later called "the birth of the Go-Go Sox," and made the AL All-Star team that year. Traded to Washington in 1952, Busby posted his best offensive seasons in 1953 (.312) and 1954 (.298, 80 RBI), was twice voted the Senators' most popular player, and ranked among the game's all-time leaders in outfield putouts per game — the speed and glove that carried him through a 13-year career. He later starred for Cleveland, highlighted by consecutive-game grand slams in July 1956, and Baltimore before closing his playing days as a defensive reserve with the Red Sox (1959-60) and Houston Colt .45s. He went on to a long coaching career, including eight seasons with the Atlanta Braves, and died in 1996 at 69.
