About Dave Hillman
Dave Hillman didn't turn pro until after an Air Force hitch, signing with the Chicago Cubs out of Dungannon, Virginia, in December 1949. He won 20 games at Class-B Rock Hill in 1951 and threw a no-hitter for Springfield in 1953 before sticking with the Cubs for good in 1957. The right-hander spent five seasons in Chicago, mostly in relief, and threw his only big-league shutout against Harvey Haddix and the Pirates on May 6, 1959. That November the Cubs sent Hillman and Jim Marshall to the Boston Red Sox for slugger Dick Gernert — one of the first interleague trades allowed without waivers — landing him on this 1960 card. A car wreck in spring training bruised his shoulder and delayed his Sox debut, but he found his footing in the bullpen, posting a sharp 2.77 ERA in 1961. He closed out his career in 1962 with brief stops in Cincinnati and with the Mets, finishing 21-37 with a 3.87 ERA over eight big-league seasons.
