About Jerry Casale
Gennaro Joseph "Jerry" Casale, a hard-throwing right-hander out of Brooklyn, signed with the Red Sox for a $30,000 bonus in October 1951 and built three strong minor-league seasons — including a 19-11 year for the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals — before two years in the Army stalled his career and left him with a sore shoulder. He debuted for Boston in September 1958 and broke through in 1959, going 13-8 with three shutouts to win the Red Sox' rookie of the year honors. His signature moment came that September 7, when he, Don Buddin, and Pumpsie Green lined back-to-back-to-back home runs off Bob Turley in a Fenway win over the Yankees — a swing Casale later painted into a 20-foot mural at Pino's, the Manhattan restaurant he ran for 27 years and a favorite stop for Ted Williams and touring Red Sox teams. This 1960 Topps card, #38, captures him in his final full Boston season before an ailing arm and the expansion draft sent him to the Angels and Tigers through 1962.
