About Earl Averill

Earl Averill Jr. signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1953 after an All-American career at the University of Oregon, debuting in the majors on April 19, 1956. He shuttled between Cleveland and the Pacific Coast League until winning 1958 PCL MVP honors with San Diego (.347, 24 home runs), a season that helped land him a trade to the Chicago Cubs — the club shown on his 1960 Topps card. Averill split 1959-60 between the Cubs and White Sox before the Angels took him in the 1960 expansion draft. In June 1962 he tied the major-league record of 17 consecutive plate appearances reaching base, a mark he shares with Piggy Ward. A right-handed catcher and outfielder, he finished a seven-season career in 1963 with a .242 average and 44 home runs across five teams. Known everywhere as "Averill Jr.," he spent his career compared to his father, Hall of Fame center fielder Earl Averill Sr. of the Cleveland Indians, later saying that trying to follow him "was a mistake because there was no following him."
