About Dick Drott
Dick Drott broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1954, signing at 17 out of Cincinnati's Western Hills High School, and worked his way up through Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Burlington and the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels before reaching the majors in 1957. The right-hander's rookie season was a sensation: a 15-11 record, third place in National League Rookie of the Year voting, and a Cubs single-game record of 15 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1957, a mark that stood until Kerry Wood broke it in 1998. Drott also led the majors in walks that year, and arm trouble soon eroded his effectiveness. He pitched for the Cubs through 1961, then closed his career with the expansion Houston Colt .45s in 1962-63, finishing 27-46. This 1960 Topps card catches him three seasons removed from that rookie summer, already working through the injuries that shortened his career. Drott later spent two decades running youth baseball clinics for the Chicago Park District before his death in 1985.
