1960 Topps #28 Brooks Robinson

About Brooks Robinson
Brooks Robinson signed with the Baltimore Orioles as an eighteen-year-old out of Little Rock, Arkansas, and debuted in September 1955. He spent all 23 of his major-league seasons at third base for the Orioles, a one-team run matched only by Carl Yastrzemski. An 18-time All-Star, he won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves and set career records for putouts, assists, and double plays at the position, establishing himself as the finest defensive third baseman the game has seen. Teammate Lee May nicknamed him "Hoover the Vacuum Cleaner" for swallowing up hard-hit grounders, later shortened to "Mr. Hoover." He won the 1964 AL MVP award, batting .317 with a league-best 118 RBIs, then turned in one of the great World Series performances in history in 1970, robbing Cincinnati hitters with diving stops and batting .429 to earn Series MVP honors as Baltimore won its second title in five seasons. Robinson entered the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1983. This 1960 Topps card, #28, catches him in the season he made his first two All-Star teams and won his first Gold Glove.
