About Gordon Jones

Gordon Bassett Jones was a control artist out of the bullpen who pitched for five major-league organizations across eleven seasons. Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Sacramento High School before the 1949 season, he lost three years to military duty before making his debut on August 6, 1954, starting one end of a doubleheader against Pittsburgh. That rookie year proved his best: a 4-4 record, 2.00 ERA, and two shutouts. After 1955 he worked almost exclusively in relief, posting his sharpest full season for the 1958 San Francisco Giants (3-1, 2.37 ERA). Baltimore is where his 1960 Topps card (#98) finds him, pitching for the Orioles in 1960-61 and finishing 17 games out of their bullpen. He retired with a 15-18 record and 232 strikeouts against just 120 walks, then coached Houston's pitchers for parts of two seasons before being let go in a 1967 dispute with his own staff.
