About Gus Triandos
Gus Triandos anchored the Baltimore Orioles' pitching staff for eight seasons, becoming the club's regular catcher in 1957 after breaking in with the New York Yankees in 1953. Signed by Yankees scout Joe Devine out of San Francisco's Mission High School in 1948, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound backstop was dubbed "Tremendous Triandos" in the minors for his size before a 17-player trade, the largest in major-league history, sent him to Baltimore in November 1954. A four-time All-Star (1957-59), he tied Yogi Berra's American League home run record for catchers with 30 in 1958 and finished with 142 homers as an Oriole, still 13th in club history. Using an oversized mitt built to tame Hoyt Wilhelm's knuckleball, Triandos caught Wilhelm's 1958 no-hitter, then in 1964 caught Jim Bunning's perfect game for Philadelphia, making him the first catcher to backstop no-hitters in both leagues. This 1960 Topps card, #60, pictures him mid-tenure as Baltimore's starting catcher and cleanup power threat.
