About Chuck Estrada
Charles Leonard Estrada broke into pro ball in 1956 after a Milwaukee Braves scout, at a semipro game to watch a different pitcher, was left impressed by Estrada's 15 straight strikeouts instead; Baltimore Orioles scout Bill Krueger signed him three days into his freshman semester at Cal Poly. A hard-throwing right-hander, Estrada reached the majors on April 21, 1960, anchoring Baltimore's young Kiddie Korps rotation alongside Steve Barber, Milt Pappas, and Jack Fisher. His rookie season is unique in American League history: his 18 wins led the league outright, making him the only AL pitcher ever to top the league in wins as a rookie. He earned an All-Star berth, The Sporting News' AL Pitcher of the Year award, and finished runner-up to teammate Ron Hansen for Rookie of the Year. Estrada won 15 more in 1961, but a serious elbow injury - bone chips and a spur - in June 1963 derailed the rest of his career. He pitched for the Orioles, Cubs, and Mets through 1967, finishing 50-44, then coached pitchers for the Rangers, Padres, and Indians. His 1960 Topps card, #126 in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, captures him during that record rookie season.
