About Ronnie Hansen
Ron Hansen signed with the Orioles out of an Albany, California high school in 1956, turning down a University of California scholarship after thirteen major-league clubs pursued the 6-foot-3 shortstop. Sciatica cost him the 1957 season, and he opened his Baltimore career in an 0-for-25 skid, but 1960 changed everything: card #127 catches him on the rise as one of Topps' Sport Magazine Rookie Stars, and he delivered a season worthy of the honor, batting .255 with 22 home runs and 86 RBI in 153 games. He started at shortstop for the American League in the All-Star Game, just the seventh rookie in history to do so, and swept Rookie of the Year honors from both the BBWAA and The Sporting News. Dealt to the White Sox in the trade that brought Luis Aparicio to Baltimore, Hansen twice led AL shortstops in double plays. On July 30, 1968, playing for Washington, he turned the majors' first unassisted triple play in 41 years, spearing a liner, stepping on second, and tagging the runner from first, a play he called "made to order." Back injuries and disc surgery eventually shortened a 15-year career spent with six clubs.
