About Rip Coleman
Walter Gary "Rip" Coleman was a hard-throwing left-hander out of Troy, New York, who starred at Syracuse and Wake Forest before the Yankees signed him for a $30,000 bonus in 1952. He broke in with an 11-8 record and a 2.69 ERA for Class A Binghamton, drawing early comparisons to a former Binghamton ace, Whitey Ford. Coleman debuted with New York on August 15, 1955, and pitched an inning of that fall's World Series loss to Brooklyn; he was with the club when it won it all the next year, going 3-5 with a career-best 3.67 ERA in 1956. A falling-out with manager Casey Stengel helped send him to Kansas City in a 13-player trade that February. After a 1958 season in the minors, he resurfaced in 1959 with the Athletics, then Baltimore, and closed out his big-league career with the Orioles in 1960 -- the club pictured on this card -- finishing 7-25, 4.58 in five major-league seasons before pitching on in the International League with Toronto through 1962.
