1960 Topps #180 Harry Simpson

About Harry Simpson
Harry Leon "Suitcase" Simpson broke into pro ball in 1946 with the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro National League. He debuted with the Cleveland Indians on April 21, 1951, one of the first Black players in the American League; Casey Stengel later called him the league's best defensive right fielder. Simpson went on to play for the Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates across an eight-year MLB career, batting .266 with 73 home runs and 381 RBI in 888 games. His best season came in 1956 with the A's — a .293 average, 21 homers and 105 RBI that earned his only All-Star selection — and he reached the 1957 World Series with the Yankees. The nickname traced not to his many trades, as often assumed, but to his size-13 shoes, likened by sportswriters to the big-footed "Suitcase Simpson" of the Toonerville Folks comic strip; growing up in Dalton, Georgia, he'd simply been called "Goody." This 1960 Topps card #180 was his last Topps issue, picturing him with the White Sox in the season his playing career came to a close.
