About Billy Loes
Billy Loes broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950, lost the 1951 season to military service, and returned in 1952 to anchor Brooklyn's rotation through 1956, helping the Dodgers to the 1953 pennant and the franchise's only Brooklyn-era World Series title in 1955. The Long Island City-born right-hander became a fixture of Series lore in 1952, when he predicted the Yankees would beat Brooklyn in seven games, was misquoted as saying six, then was charged with a Game Six balk after dropping the ball mid-windup, and let a Vic Raschi grounder bounce off his leg for a single, later saying he had lost it in the sun. Writer Jimmy Breslin called him a "Dizzy Dean from the sidewalks of New York" for his candid, oddball quotes that made him one of Brooklyn's most memorable characters. Traded to Baltimore in 1956, Loes made the 1957 All-Star team before closing his career with the San Francisco Giants in 1960-61, finishing 80-63 with 645 strikeouts over 11 seasons. His 1960 Topps card, #181, catches him in his first season on the West Coast, a long way from the Ebbets Field stage where he made his name.
