About Jack Sanford
John Stanley Sanford signed with the Phillies out of Wellesley High School in Massachusetts in 1947, then spent seven minor league seasons before debuting in the majors on September 16, 1956, at age 27. He broke out the next year, going 19-8 with a league-leading 188 strikeouts and a 3.08 ERA to win National League Rookie of the Year and an All-Star selection. After a rough sophomore season, Philadelphia traded him to the Giants in December 1958. Sanford anchored San Francisco's rotation for seven years, leading the league with six shutouts in 1960 — the season pictured on this card — before his signature 1962: 24 wins, sixteen straight victories from June to September, and the pennant that sent the Giants to their only World Series of his career. He started three Series games against the Yankees, throwing a three-hit shutout in Game Two and allowing one run over seven innings in a Game Seven loss, then finished runner-up to Don Drysdale for the Cy Young Award. He later coached pitchers on Alvin Dark's Cleveland staff before his death in 2000.
