About Willie Kirkland
Willie Kirkland broke into the majors as part of the wave of young talent that remade the Giants after their move to San Francisco, winning the regular right-field job in 1958 and starting the franchise's first-ever West Coast game on April 15 that year, an 8-0 rout of the Dodgers at Seals Stadium in which he singled and drove in a run batting cleanup behind Willie Mays. A powerful left-handed hitter out of Detroit's Northwestern High School, the Alabama-born Kirkland held right field for three seasons in San Francisco, hitting .261 with 57 home runs, including the 21 homers, 10 triples and 12 stolen bases he posted in 1960, the season shown on this card. That winter the Giants traded him to Cleveland with Johnny Antonelli for Harvey Kuenn; Kirkland responded with career highs of 27 homers and 95 RBIs in 1961, highlighted by a three-homer game against the White Sox. He finished with 148 home runs over nine big-league seasons, then closed his career with six productive years for Japan's Hanshin Tigers, twice topping 35 homers.
