About Billy Martin

Alfred Manuel "Billy" Martin broke in with the New York Yankees in 1950, arriving on the strength of Casey Stengel's recommendation from their days together with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks. The scrappy second baseman won four World Series with New York (1951-53, 1956), highlighted by a game-saving catch of a windblown Jackie Robinson popup in Game Seven of the 1952 Series and a record-setting 1953 Series in which he hit .500 with 12 hits, 23 total bases, and the walk-off single that clinched the title, earning him World Series MVP. A 1957 brawl at the Copacabana nightclub hastened a trade out of New York, and after stops in Kansas City, Detroit, and Cleveland, Martin landed with Cincinnati for the 1960 season pictured on this card. That August he broke Cubs pitcher Jim Brewer's cheekbone in an on-field fight, drawing a suspension and a decade-long lawsuit. Martin retired in 1961 a .257 hitter, then built a second, more famous career managing five clubs, including five terms with the Yankees and the 1977 championship, with a fiery style nicknamed "Billyball." He died in a 1989 car accident, never elected to the Hall of Fame.
