1960 Topps #32 Sophomore Stalwarts
On this card: Jim O'Toole, Vada Pinson

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards scattered through the 1960 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a nickname headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The players on this card
"Sophomore Stalwarts" salutes two building blocks of a rebuilding Reds club, pictured together on the dugout steps at Wrigley Field: left-hander Jim O'Toole and center fielder Vada Pinson, close friends who broke in the same year and blossomed together. Both reached Cincinnati in 1958 — Pinson debuting on Opening Day before a mid-season slump sent him to the minors, O'Toole picking up a tough-luck 2-1 loss in his only start, against the champion Braves — then delivered real breakthroughs in 1959, their first full big-league season. Pinson hit .316 with 205 hits, 20 homers, and league-leading totals in runs (131) and doubles (47), making the All-Star team. O'Toole opened 5-8 with a 5.15 ERA until new manager Fred Hutchinson made him a fixture in the rotation, a shift that carried into a 12-12, 3.80 ERA workhorse season over 196 1/3 innings in 1960. Both helped push Cincinnati to the 1961 pennant.
