About Chico Cardenas
Leonardo "Chico" Cárdenas signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1957 after leaving Cuba in 1956, one of the last Cuban players to reach the majors before the border closed. Card #119 in 1960 Topps, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, captures his rookie season, when he was called up in July to fill in for the injured Roy McMillan. He won the everyday shortstop job in 1962 and anchored Cincinnati for seven seasons, making four of his five All-Star teams as a Red (1964, 1965, 1966, 1968) and winning a Gold Glove in 1965. His steady glove work earned him the nickname "Mr. Automatic." In 1966 he set a Reds record with 20 home runs by a shortstop, a mark that stood until Barry Larkin broke it three decades later. Traded to Minnesota after 1968, Cárdenas helped the Twins win the inaugural AL West title in 1969 and later played for the Angels, Indians, and Rangers before retiring in 1975. Cincinnati inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1981.
