About Duke Carmel
Leon James "Duke" Carmel signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1955, a 6-foot-3 left-handed-hitting outfielder out of New York City's Ben Franklin High School. In his third pro season he starred in the Class C Pioneer League, leading the circuit with 118 runs and 121 RBI while batting a career-high .324. Carmel debuted with St. Louis on September 10, 1959, the rookie season pictured on his 1960 Topps card (#120), issued in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset and recognized today as his official rookie card. After brief big-league trials and two full seasons in the minors, he returned in 1963 and opened the year with a pinch-hit, ninth-inning homer off Elroy Face. Traded to the Mets that July, Carmel became their starting first baseman and delivered a game-winning homer against his old club. He finished with a .211 average, four home runs and 23 RBI over parts of four seasons, then belted a career-high 35 home runs at Triple-A Buffalo in 1964 before retiring after 1967.
