The players on this card
The 1960 Cardinals went 86-68, a fifteen-game turnaround from the year before, and finished third in the National League, nine games behind the pennant-winning Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Solly Hemus and GM Bing Devine built the club around third baseman Ken Boyer, who hit .304 with 32 home runs and 97 RBI on his way to a Gold Glove, and first baseman Bill White, who won a Gold Glove of his own. Stan Musial, at 39, still batted .275 in a part-time left-field role. Ernie Broglio led the staff at 21-9 with a 2.74 ERA, Larry Jackson won 18, and Lindy McDaniel closed games out of the bullpen with 27 saves and a 2.09 ERA. A May trade sent Vinegar Bend Mizell to Pittsburgh for second baseman Julián Javier, while rookie right-hander Bob Gibson worked his way into the pitching mix at Busch Stadium.
