About Albie Pearson
Albert Gregory Pearson signed with the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1953, leaving Mt. San Antonio College to chase a career his 5-foot-5 frame made scouts doubt. After five minor-league seasons he reached Washington in 1958 and won American League Rookie of the Year honors, batting .275 as the Senators' center fielder. His 1960 Topps card catches him with the Baltimore Orioles, the club that had acquired him in 1959 and shuttled him between the majors and minors through the 1960 season pictured here. That winter he wrote Angels general manager Fred Haney asking to be drafted, and Los Angeles took him with the 30th and final pick of the 1960 expansion draft. The move revived his career: he led the AL with 115 runs scored in 1962, then hit .304 in 1963 and started the All-Star Game in center field over an injured Mickey Mantle. His small stature with the Angels earned him the nickname "The Littlest Angel." Pearson retired in 1966 with a .270 career average, later became an ordained minister, and in 1997 founded Father's Heart Ranch, a home for abused and neglected boys.
