1960 Topps #190 Gene Woodling

About Gene Woodling
Woodling broke into pro ball in 1940 with Mansfield of the Ohio State League, batting .398, and went on to lead four different minor leagues in hitting before Cleveland scout Bill Bradley's signing paid off. After Navy service in World War II — playing alongside Hall of Famers Mickey Cochrane and Billy Herman on the Great Lakes Blue Jackets — he reached the majors for good in 1949 as a left fielder for Casey Stengel's Yankees, platooning with Hank Bauer. Woodling helped New York win five straight World Series (1949-53), batting .318 over 27 postseason games with three homers, including one that backed Allie Reynolds' first no-hitter in 1951; in 1952 he became the first player to pinch-hit a triple in Series history. Teammates called him "Rock" — Reynolds said, "He was as hard as one." Dealt to Baltimore in the 17-player Yankees-Orioles trade of November 1954, Woodling returned to the Orioles in 1958 and made the 1959 All-Star team, batting .300 with 14 homers and winning the club's MVP award. Card #190 in the 1960 Topps set catches him in that stretch with Baltimore. He retired in 1962 with a .284 average and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1992.
