1960 Topps #191 Johnny Klippstein

About Johnny Klippstein
Signed out of a 1944 tryout camp, John Calvin Klippstein was lost by the Cardinals to the Dodgers, then taken by the Cubs in the 1949 minor-league draft. He debuted for Chicago on May 3, 1950, a hard-throwing right-hander whose wildness earned him the nickname "The Wild Man of Borneo," after a 1941 film, hung on him during an erratic 1953 season. Traded to Cincinnati, he threw seven hitless innings on May 26, 1956, before a pinch-hitter lifted him in a combined nine-inning no-hitter later decertified by a 1991 rules change. Dealt to the Dodgers in 1958, he earned a ring in the 1959 World Series — the team pictured on his 1960 Topps card (#191), even though Los Angeles had already sold him to Cleveland that April. As an Indian he became a full-time reliever, tying for the American League saves lead with 14, and later anchored Minnesota's bullpen during the Twins' 1965 pennant run. He finished an 18-year career at 101-118 with a 4.24 ERA and 65 saves.
