About Don Demeter
A 6-foot-4 product of Oklahoma City's Capitol Hill High School, Don Demeter signed with Brooklyn and broke into the majors in 1956, taking over as the Los Angeles Dodgers' center fielder by 1959 and helping beat the Chicago White Sox in that year's World Series. On April 21, 1959, he hit three home runs against the Giants — including the first-ever inside-the-park shot at the L.A. Coliseum and an 11th-inning walk-off — and a Los Angeles newspaper contest afterward nicknamed him "Spee-Demeter." A broken wrist from a collision with Maury Wills ended his 1960 season early, and he was traded to Philadelphia in 1961. There he blossomed into a power threat, peaking at 29 home runs and 107 RBI in 1962, and that September began a 266-game errorless streak in the outfield — a major-league record that stood for nearly 30 years. He closed his career with Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland, retiring after 1967 with 163 home runs, then went home to Oklahoma City to run a business and later found and pastor a Baptist church.
