About Jim Gilliam
James "Junior" Gilliam broke into the Negro Leagues in 1946 with the Baltimore Elite Giants, picking up his nickname at 16 as the club's youngest player, and made three East All-Star teams before Brooklyn purchased his contract for $4,000. Handed the impossible task of replacing Jackie Robinson at second base in 1953, he answered by scoring 125 runs, leading the majors in triples, and winning National League Rookie of the Year. The switch-hitting Gilliam anchored Brooklyn and Los Angeles through ten pennant-winning seasons and four World Series titles (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965), shifting from second base to third as the club needed him. This card catches his 1960 season, his second full year at third base, when he drew 96 walks and scored 96 runs setting the table ahead of new shortstop Maury Wills — the discipline Wills later credited for his record-breaking 1962 stolen-base season. Gilliam coached the Dodgers from 1964 until his death in 1978, and his No. 19 was retired that October, one of only two Dodgers numbers retired without a Hall of Fame plaque attached.
